After a short but intensive preparation, every 2 weeks one lock head could be tackled. This means: removing the old drive with Panama wheel, carrying out concrete work, installing and testing the new installation.
Extra challenge: the lock has a monument status. In addition to the maritime requirements, the appearance of the drive had to remain identical. Angled drives were therefore not allowed to be equipped with Glaesson teeth but had to conform to the “old” straight shape.
Close cooperation with the main contractor and an unconventional approach ensured that the 12 drives could be replaced within the specified time without significant inconvenience to the shipping traffic.
